Why supporting a shelter for women is now ‘kind of radioactive’

A March 2026 NPR story underscores the need to surge support to local organizations providing services to women. According to the story: A global survey by U.N. Women published in October 2025 found that more than 40% of organizations working to end violence against women and girls had to scale back life-saving services or shut down completely in the past year because of funding cuts.

The problem is particularly acute in Honduras. A shelter director there said that budget cuts in the past year had forced her to scale back medical care, psychological support and legal services for the women her shelters support and that her organization can't afford diapers and formula for the children who arrive with their mothers.

Tilo Fund advisor Diana Florez told NPR: "This issue is falling off the agenda. It's like women's needs are disappearing."
